Communism 101

Every so often I take my son to "story time" at the library. It's for kids under 3... basically babies. Every week we sing "The More We Get Together":

The more we get together
together
together
The more we get together
the happier we'll be

For my books are your books
And your books are my books

The more we get together the happier we'll be

Now I'm all for sharing. But I'm also all for private property. Something about this song irks me. I call it Commie 101.

haha, wow! yeah so glad we are exposing our kids to this so early in life together. :) I actually learned the song as "your friends are my friends, and my friends are your friends" sounds a little less commie at least. lol

Yeah, you kinda have to think of it in a "Three Musketeers" kinda way. "All for one and One for All". The Three Musketeers weren't communist.....were they?!?!?

Psalm 133:1 How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!

For my books are your books
and your books are my books...

Acts 4:32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.

Sounds like Jesus 101 to me.

Just sayin'.

That's so funny! Maybe you and Jon could help them out and re-write the song? :P

Mama Vee,

If speaking to a Christian community, I would agree with you. (Notice Acts 4:32 says all the "believers.") But even then, this generosity stems from a choice to do with one's property as one chooses. These believers were not forced by the church or the apostles to hold all things in common. They chose to live this way out of hearts transformed by the Gospel. (See Acts 5:4 where even Peter tells a parishioner, "While [the land] remained unsold, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control?")

However, I am not speaking in terms of how Christians should operate but how governments should. The principle of private property is foundational to a free society, and should be protected by civil authorities. It is also a principle whole-heartedly supported by the Bible. Beginning even with two of God's most basic commands: "Thou shall not steal" and "Thou shall not covet" (Ex.20:15,17), we see an intrinsic right toward ownership. Governments that operate from this principle of private property provide people with the most freedom... including the freedom to worship as they choose and to give freely of their possessions as they deem fit.

Ah yes, good old "sharing." I think I'll call my mom and tell her she trained me to be a communist.

I still don't get why communism is so bad(apart from, of course, it being founded from an anti-God philosophy). If the government happens to take 100% of your wages, we should pay it happily, right?

Anyway, while we have "freedom" in America, godlessness still abounds.

Governments can try to take the place of God, but they never actually can... I just don't get how Christians should fear something like a particular form of government.
